Onboarding Checklist

Published February 28, 2026 · Last updated March 5, 2026 · 3 min read

When you first sign in to Obvious, a Getting Started checklist appears in the bottom-right corner of your screen. It's a short list of five steps that walks you through the essentials — setting up your profile, creating your first project, and connecting the tools you already use. Think of it like the setup assistant on a new phone: it won't take long, and everything works better once you've finished it.

This guide explains what each step covers and what happens as you complete them.

Where to find the checklist

The checklist appears automatically after you sign in. It stays pinned to the bottom-right corner of your workspace while you work.

You can collapse it by clicking the chevron icon in the header, or dismiss it entirely by clicking the X. Once dismissed, the checklist won't reappear.

The five steps

The checklist tracks five things. You don't have to complete them in order — Obvious checks each one off automatically as you go.

Complete your profile

Click this step to open Settings > Personalization. Set your company and role so Obvious can tailor the experience to how you work. Two fields, a few seconds.

Create your first project

Projects are where everything lives in Obvious — documents, workbooks, agents, and conversations all in one place. Like a folder, but smarter. Head to the home screen, type what you want to work on in the text input, and press Enter. Obvious creates the project and drops you in.

This step checks itself off the moment your first project exists.

Create your first artifact

Artifacts are the things you build inside a project: workbooks, documents, views, and more. The quickest way to create one is to ask the agent in the chat panel:

Create a sheet to track my open tasks

The agent builds it for you. Or click the + button (labeled Create or upload artifacts) and pick what you want to make.

Once any artifact exists in your workspace, this step is done.

Invite your team

Obvious is built for collaboration. Click this step to open the invite dialog, then add teammates by email. They'll get access to your workspace and can join your projects.

This step completes when your workspace has more than one member.

Connect calendar

Sync your calendar so Obvious can pull in meetings, notes, and scheduling context. Click this step to open Settings > Connectors, then connect Google Calendar, Outlook, or whichever calendar you use.

How completion works

The checklist doesn't rely on you checking boxes. It watches your workspace in real time and marks each step as complete the moment the underlying action happens. Create a project from the home screen and the second circle fills in green — no extra clicks required.

A progress counter in the header shows how many steps you've finished (e.g., 3/5). When all five are done, a brief celebration banner appears, and the checklist collapses on its own after a few seconds.
