Moving Projects Between Workspaces

This guide walks you through moving a project from one workspace to another in Obvious.
Before You Start
You need to be a full member (not a guest) in the destination workspace. Guests can't receive projects — if the Move to Workspace option doesn't show a workspace you expect to see, that's why.
The project stays intact throughout the move. All your artifacts — documents, workbooks, sheets, views, files, and agent context — travel with it.
What Transfers (and What Doesn't)
What moves with the project:
-
All artifacts (documents, workbooks, views, forms, presentations, folios)
-
Uploaded files
-
Project instructions and agent context
What doesn't move automatically:
-
Folder placement — the project is removed from any folder it was in and lands at the root of the destination workspace. You can move it into a folder after.
-
Team assignments — the project's team assignment is not automatically cleared when you move it. Because teams are workspace-specific, the project will silently retain a reference to a team in the source workspace. Reassign it to a team in the destination workspace after moving to avoid this stale link.
-
Workspace-level sharing — grants given to the source workspace are not cleared from the project. Source workspace members retain whatever access they had. The destination workspace gets no automatic access. You'll need to explicitly share the project with people in the new workspace.
How to Move a Project
- In the left sidebar, hover over the project you want to move. Click the ⋯ (more actions) menu.
Alternatively, right-click the project name to open the same menu.
-
Select Move to Workspace. A submenu appears listing every workspace where you have full membership.
-
Click the destination workspace name. A confirmation dialog appears showing the project name and target workspace.
-
Click Move to confirm.
The project disappears from the current workspace immediately and reappears in the destination workspace.
After the Move
Open the destination workspace and find your project at the root level (not inside any folder). From here:
-
Drag it into a folder, or hover over the project and use the ⋯ menu → Move to Folder to organize it.
-
If it was assigned to a team, go to the project's Settings → Team and reassign it.
-
To restore workspace-level sharing, open the project's Share settings and add the appropriate people or workspace.
Note: Moving a project doesn't affect the project's direct member list. Anyone with a direct grant (view or edit) keeps their access — those permissions are attached to the project itself, not the workspace it lives in.
Moving a Duplicate Instead
If you want to keep the project in its current workspace and send a copy to another, duplicate it first.
-
Open the ⋯ menu and select Duplicate. Obvious creates a full copy in the same workspace, including all artifacts and files.
-
Once the duplicate appears, use Move to Workspace on the duplicate to send it to the destination workspace.
The original stays exactly where it is.
