2FA Locked Out

Published February 28, 2026 · Last updated March 5, 2026 · 2 min read

Lost access to your authenticator app and can't sign in to Obvious. Here's how to get back in.

Use a backup code

When you set up two-factor authentication, Obvious generated 10 one-time backup codes. If you saved them, use one now.

  1. On the Obvious sign-in page, enter your email and password.
  2. When prompted for your verification code, click Use a backup code instead.
  3. Enter one of your unused backup codes and click Verify.

You're in. Each backup code works once, so cross off the one you just used. If you're running low, generate a fresh set from Settings → Security.

If you don't have your backup codes

Contact Obvious support at help@obvious.ai. Include:

  • The email address on your account
  • Your workspace name
  • A brief description of what happened

The support team will verify your identity and help you regain access. For security, this process may take up to 24 hours.

Prevent this next time

Once you're back in, take two steps to avoid a repeat lockout:

  1. Save your backup codes somewhere safe. A password manager is ideal. Don't store them only on the device with your authenticator app — that defeats the purpose.
  2. Add your authenticator to a second device. If your authenticator app supports cloud sync or multi-device setup, turn it on.
